The tree is distributed only in Japan and Jeju Island in South Korea, and has recently become famous as the sign of Prince Eugene of Akishino. The classification of the Koya-maki tree is in the family Koyamakiaceae, and the family Koyamaki is a rare tree with one family, one genus and one species.
It is named “Koya-maki” because it is abundantly found in Koya Mountain in Wakayama Prefecture. It is loved as a sacred tree in Koya Mountain and is used as a substitute for flowers offered to Buddha.
Since it is resistant to water and does not decay easily, it is still valued as a material for bathtubs and bridges. Recently, Koya-maki trees have been used as bridge piles for the Senju Bridge.
Koya Maki’s essential oil has a low oil extraction rate of 0.1%, making it a valuable essential oil. The branches and leaves used to produce the essential oil are made from the end branches of Koya Maki trees that are made to be offered to Mt.
Its fragrance is unique, with an earthy and refreshing scent. Recently, it has been used to scent the hand towels of JAL First Class.
